Agile Project Management is a highly collaborative, quality-focused approach to software and systems delivery, which emphasises potentially working solutions produced at regular intervals for review and course correction.
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working solutions over comprehensive documentation
Client collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan
That is, while there is value in the items on
the right, we value the items on the left more.
A scrum is a brief, daily stand-up meeting to encourage communication, identify issues, and socialise ideas. The Scrum Master (who is not a manager) is in charge of tracking progress and keeping the team on target.
When a larger project is broken down into multiple smaller projects, these small projects are referred to as a Sprints. These allow teams to deliver more immediate results and respond faster. They also serve as a checkpoint to monitor progress.
The larger the team, the longer it takes to complete tasks, according to researchers at UCLA and UNC. In one experiment, it took two-person teams 36 minutes to assemble a 50 piece Lego set. When the team size was doubled to four people, it took the teams 52 minutes to complete the task, 16 minutes longer. As team sizes increase, team coordination declines, conflict increases, and motivation decreases.
The greatest potential benefit of Scrum is for complex work involving knowledge creation and collaboration, such as custom application and software development.
